Timing chain problems with 1.4TSI / TFSI engines

Distributieketting problemen bij de 1.4TSI / TFSI motoren

The 1.4 TSI / TFSI engines from the VAG group have been known for years to have problems with the timing chain. In practice, we still regularly see this problem in the workshop — and often sooner than you would expect.

Practical example from our workshop

Recently, we had an Audi A1 from 2012 with a 1.4 TFSI engine (engine code CAXA) in our shop.

What was going on?
➡️ Approximately 10,000 km ago, an aftermarket timing chain kit was installed, including a new camshaft adjuster.
➡️ The customer returned with complaints of a rattling noise during a cold start.
➡️ The fault memory contained error codes related to the stretching of the chain. Such as P0016, P0014, P0015, P1340, P000A, and P3008.

This is a classic example of a problem we are seeing more and more frequently.

The real problem

Many aftermarket timing chain kits for these engines are simply not of sufficient quality.

What happens in practice:

  • The chain stretches too quickly
  • The engine goes out of timing
  • The camshaft adjustment can no longer correct this
  • Result: rattling + error codes + rough engine running

And this can happen within 10,000 km, as in this case.

Our solution

In this Audi, we installed an original timing chain kit.

✔️ Problem immediately resolved
✔️ No more rattling at cold start
✔️ No more error codes present

👉 Conclusion: original is simply the only correct choice in this case

Pay attention during diagnosis

Are you encountering one or more of the following complaints with a 1.4 TSI / TFSI?

  • Rattle on cold start
  • Poor starting
  • Engine runs rough
  • Error codes related to timing / camshaft adjustment

👉 Then the timing chain is very likely stretched.

We also supply this solution

Because we encounter this problem so often, we have now included the original timing chain kit in our assortment.

✔️ Immediately available from stock
✔️ Suitable for many VAG 1.4 TSI / TFSI engines
✔️ Prevent repeat repairs and complaints
